This session of JMS 430 has had a slightly rocky start owing to the difficulties with finding a website host and the generally oppressive atmosphere created by the relentless heat of the last month. I personally am also taking fully six classes this semester, so everything feels a bit frenetic at the moment. That being said, I think this class has gone about as well as it can thus far, and while I am already familiar with many of the tools and rules being taught here, it has been valuable as both a refresher and a way of filling gaps in my knowledge.
For the story project, I will probably end up writing about San Diego's ongoing efforts to combat the housing crisis and its successes and failures. I know that a few people responded to my initial post about three story ideas telling me to do both of the other ones. However, I think that the housing story is by far the most interesting, easily the most important, and builds on my existing areas of expertise. It is also likely to be one of the easiest in terms of finding and getting in contact with sources, as even while writing up the source list I was able to imagine in pretty clear detail how I'd get in touch with multiple of them.
I look forward to seeing how this class and the story project progress as we go deeper into October.

The main event of this class that feels worth writing about here over the two or so weeks since the last entry is our ongoing investigations of AI image and text generation technology. Of everything we have done in this first nine weeks of the semester, I'd wager that our assignments on both using AI tools and learning to identify when they are being used by others have been the most informative, engaging, and eye-opening out of anything we've done in this class so far.
Aside from this, the progress on my story project has frankly been somewhere between slow and nonexistent. This is owing to my being entirely absorbed with other work from this class, work from my other classes, and a music festival of which I am one the principal organizers which took place this past weekend. That being said, I think I'm more or less staying on track to complete everything on time and in good shape.
